The term “zeolite” originates from two Greek words. In the Greek language, “lithos” means “stone,” and “zein” means “boiling.” It can be described as “boiling stone” in Persian, as it melts and boils when exposed to direct flames. Natural and synthetic zeolites (enzymites) are considered highly beneficial and profitable mineral resources, contributing millions of dollars annually to industrialized countries. Despite the abundant presence of natural zeolite deposits in our country, including in Isfahan and Zanjan provinces, these resources remain valuable. However, unfortunately, its practical applications in various industries, including the poultry industry, remain largely unrecognized. The market demand for various natural and synthetic zeolites varies based on their distinct physical and chemical properties and is rapidly increasing. Zeolites (enzymites) are, in fact, tectosilicates that are typically associated with mineral materials such as quartz and feldspars. They possess a three-dimensional structure composed of silicate (SiO4) tetrahedra, where all the apexes are occupied by oxygen ions. In some types of zeolites, the tetrahedral silicates have been replaced with trivalent aluminum, which helps reduce the positive charge. Additionally, the presence of monovalent and divalent cations such as sodium, potassium, and calcium in their crystal structure is often noticeable. The combination of these physical and chemical properties makes zeolites (enzymites) the best detoxifying agents for mycotoxins in the poultry industry. Zeolites (enzymites) have the following general properties:They have a high water-absorption capacity.They possess high porosity and absorption capacity, particularly for diverse substances including toxins.During water absorption, they maintain a stable molecular structure.They have a high capacity for absorbing toxic gases.In some cases, they act as catalysts and accelerators for chemical reactions.They possess molecular sieving properties.They have a high electrical conductivity property.Therefore, based on the above properties, the most important application of zeolites (enzymites) in the poultry industry is the prevention and treatment of fungal intoxications in poultry.Through recent research conducted in recent years, it has been well established that zeolites (enzymites) effectively detoxify and neutralize fungal toxins, including aflatoxins and ochratoxins. Another important application of zeolites (enzymites) in the poultry industry is the reduction of ammonia levels in poultry houses. Poultry farmers, especially those raising birds from 5 weeks of age and beyond, can effectively prevent toxicity caused by ammonia and create a less favorable environment for the occurrence of respiratory infections by applying zeolites to the poultry bedding. The exceptional and significant gas adsorption property of zeolites, including ammonia, is notable. This substance is capable of effectively reducing the ammonia produced in poultry houses and can effectively mitigate the ammonia levels in the poultry farming environment.Another application of zeolites (enzymites) in the poultry industry is their use for water hardness control. Zeolites can effectively remove hardness-causing minerals from water, thus improving water quality for poultry consumption and maintaining their health and performance. In a way that by using them, water hardness is significantly reduced, and the drinking water for poultry becomes completely standardized and suitable.Another practical application of them in the poultry industry is the considerable reduction of the occurrence of tibial dyschondroplasia in broiler chickens. However, this property is manifested when including vitamin A in poultry diets.Due to their high porosity, zeolites (enzymites) also enhance the overall capacity of the avian gastrointestinal tract, aiding in the absorption of various toxic substances, including organophosphates. As a result, the likelihood of common chemical poisoning in poultry is reduced. Moreover, when used in laying hens along with vitamin A supplementation, zeolites (enzymites) contribute to strengthening the eggshell, reducing egg breakage and associated losses.Therefore, it can be concluded that zeolites (enzymites) have a wide range of applications in the poultry industry from various aspects.
